Position Description

TARGET ENTRY SALARY: $67,500 – $73,500

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Neighborhood Family Center Inc.  The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The Executive Director is responsible for the implementation of policies and procedures set forth by the Board of Directors as well as annual goals and objectives, and the financial, program, and administrative management of the Corporation.  This is an exempt position in accordance with the Department of Labor FLSA standards.  Salary set annually by the Board of Directors; Benefits: Health, Life, Retirement. Guidance and direction is provided by the President of the Board and its Executive Committee.

The Executive Director demonstrates the ability to work at both strategic and practical levels and uses strong management, problem solving, and administrative skills including but not limited to: people, processes, program, and financial management; The Executive Director has experience working with community organizations, government entities, and both public and private agencies interested in specialized activities within the community the Neighborhood Family Center serves.  This position also requires knowledge of fund development and donor cultivation.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: — Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

In program development and administration, the Executive Director will

  1. Assure that the organization has a long range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  2. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
  3. Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization’s work.
  4. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  5. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

In communications, the Executive Director will

  1. See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
  2. Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
  3. Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.
  4. Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.

In relations with staff, the Executive Director will:

  1. Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid and volunteers.
  2. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  3. See that an effective management strategy, with appropriate provisions for succession is in place.
  4. Encourage staff and volunteer development education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program goals of the organization.
  5. Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality people.

In budget and finance, the Executive Director will:

  1. Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
  2. Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the Board in preparing budgets; and see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  3. Jointly with the Board ensure adequate funds are available for the organization to carry out its work.
  4. Jointly, with the President and Secretary of the Board of Directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
  5. Work with JWB through the entire funding process to include audits from several independent firms.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory.  The qualifications for this position are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s and/or five years executive level experience in a nonprofit organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Proven leadership skills, fundraising experience, financial management, and ability to manage and motivate staff required; strong oral and written communication skills, including public presentation ability; must be able to pass a Level II background screening
